I am an Artist Educator, known to friends and colleagues as “Buddy.” I taught Art and 3D Design in Central Virginia Public Schools for 39 years. Teaching Art as the foundation for “Critical Thinking” has helped me explore numerous processes of making with my students. I love problem solving and work through every medium using the sculptural processes of additive, subtractive and modeling. The attraction of carving wood started at a young age with the fascination of watching my grandfather whittle. This led to mallet and chisels in high school. My interest in clay started at that time and I began throwing on the potter’s wheel in college at VCU. My passion for Raku fired ceramics started in the mid 1990’s with my first solo exhibition, Intersections, at Middle Street Gallery in Washington, VA in 2004. After retirement from public schools I have focused my work on sculptural forms with Raku fired ceramics. Wood is often a component and almost always a part of my process. My making journey continues in Moseley, VA where I pursue craft-quality while embracing the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi; “Nothing is perfect, Nothing is complete, Nothing is permanent.”
